Crisis Communication

Image
As you may know, Covid hit Canada not too long ago and the day it did, everyone went into a panic. Grocery stores quickly ran out of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and all kinds of foods. At the time I was working retail as well and we had to immediately adapt and instill new procedures. This was a communication crisis between us and the customers because we were not prepared and ready to make all these changes. We came up with a plan fast and immediately communicated it to our customers. We were trying new things and seeing what worked best, trying to find which option was going to be the safest for employees and customers. We had someone at the door counting customers, we wiped down every surface and till after each use, and implemented social distancing within our procedures. Even though customers may have been frustrated at first, in the end, they cooperated with the plan and appreciated the concern we had for them.

Storytelling with Structure

Image
The activity of Storytelling with Structure again relates to the concepts within the table of the storytelling catalog. This time these concepts are relative to effective communication strategies in different scenarios. Each one of the concepts is rooted in our interactions and experiences and every scenario requires specific aspects to effectively communicate your intention. Essentially, these ideas revolve around effective communication, empathy, trust, collaboration, and personal development. All of which are fundamental to our meaningful human experiences and relationships. They reflect values and principles that enrich relationships, encourage collaboration, and produce favorable results in various aspects of life.

Communicating Difference

Image
I’ve worked at multiple jobs and the significance of diversity has always been clear to me. The workplace consists of employees possessing an array of different cultural backgrounds. Acknowledging and respecting these backgrounds are necessary for communicating differences in the workplace. It will be very beneficial to have a multicultural workforce because it encourages open dialogue. It creates an understanding and collaboration among one another. Most importantly having a multicultural workforce also demonstrates respect, tolerance, and acceptance from a company. This improves company culture and reduces conflict within the workplace. Organizations can create a more welcoming and supportive work environment for everyone.

Crafting a Pitch

Image
This activity of crafting a pitch relates to the many concepts we encountered from the table in the storytelling catalog. These concepts underscore the importance of effective communication because communicating goes far beyond just words but also values-driven actions as well. This includes body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, and even the context in which messages are delivered. These actions signify the overall structure of communication. Whether it’s in a group setting or just you and one other person, conveying a successful pitch can spark the audience’s imagination to implement similar changes in their own situations.

Stressful Conversation

Image
This activity reflects on the principles we’ve discussed from Holly Weeks’ “Taking the Stress Out of Stressful Conversations. These principles focus on effective communication strategies such as addressing specific behaviors and using a constructive tone. It will help promote a culture of open dialogue, active listening, and empathy within teams or organizations. This approach emphasizes the importance of handling difficult conversations professionally and constructively, which is essential for effective leadership, also another key concept we’ve discussed. Overall, this will encourage better understanding, collaboration, and problem-solving for a company, ultimately fostering a more cohesive and successful team dynamic. This is a present notion to all of us, throughout school, jobs, and so on.
